Maintenance Practices

Correct maintenance is vital for minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity, resulting in lower overall operating costs. Regular maintenance practices include:

Walkaround Inspection: At the start of each shift, conduct a thorough inspection of the hammer and host machine. Ensure all hydraulic connections are tight and secure. Look for loose bolts, oil leaks, and any broken or worn parts. Address all issues before operating the hammer.

Greasing: Proper greasing of the hammer tool is essential to prevent excessive wear and tool breakage. For manual greasing, locate the grease access points, remove protective rubber plugs, and apply the specified number of strokes from a grease gun.

Bushing and Tool Inspection: Every 50 service hours or once a week, remove and inspect the hammer tool and lower bushing. Proper alignment of the hammer tool with the bushing is critical for performance and durability.

Storage: When storing the hammer, it should be positioned vertically with downforce on the tool to prevent contamination. If the hammer will not be used for an extended period, take special precautions such as plugging hydraulic ports and applying grease or rust-inhibiting oil.

Operating Techniques

Setup: Position the machine in front of the material to be broken and ensure the hammer tool is nearly vertical. Avoid operating the hammer at an angle, as this can accelerate tool wear.

Activation: Once positioned, activate the hammer, applying sufficient feed force so that the front end of the machine feels light but is not completely lifted off the ground.

Duration of Operation: Do not operate the hammer for more than 15 seconds in one spot to avoid dust accumulation that can hinder performance. If the material does not break within this time, reposition the hammer.

Temperature Management: Monitor hydraulic oil temperature, ensuring it does not exceed 80°C (176°F). Excessive temperatures can lead to reduced seal life and potential internal damage.

Avoid Blank Firing: Stop the hammer immediately once the material fractures to prevent excessive blank firing, which can cause damage to both the hammer tool and internal components.

Tool Selection

Choosing the right tool for the application is critical for productivity. Understanding the two primary types of breaking—impact breaking and penetrative breaking—will guide tool selection:

Impact Breaking: Best for breaking hard, brittle material at the surface, commonly used for reducing oversized material in quarry applications. The blunt tool profile is typically most effective.

Penetrative Breaking: Necessary for fracturing and excavating material that is still in the ground. Moil and chisel tools are recommended for trenching, tunneling, and demolition applications.
