The latest rock-breaking project involved a hydraulic hammer purchased from BAICAI, specifically the SB1400 series, with a rating of 1500 ft-lb of impact energy. Initially, the focus was on softer decomposed granite, which had already been partially excavated. The breaker efficiently shattered the softer rock, allowing for quicker removal with the help of two excavators.
Progress was made on a more challenging section, referred to as “Stubborn Rock,” which required approximately four to five hours of work to fully break apart. This rock, significantly harder and less decomposed, slowed down the process, especially as awkward angles made it difficult to chip away. After considerable effort, it was finally cleared, and the area was backfilled with dirt.
With the stubborn rock removed, work shifted to the adjacent “Rim of Rocks,” which was also successfully cleared. This allowed for the start of terracing for elevation adjustments, marking a significant step forward in the overall project. Observations revealed the unpredictable nature of rock types; while one nearby rock broke easily, another proved nearly impossible to penetrate initially. The latter remains an ongoing challenge, potentially adding to the list of stubborn rocks if it needs further attention later.
